He was born on 1 March 1953 in Nampula, Portuguese Mozambique and played for the youth team of Mozambican football club, Ferroviario de Nampula in 1968.
The Portuguese started his managing career with Portuguese under 20 team, which won the FIFA World Youth Championships in 1989 and 1991.
He later went to coach for Portugal senior national team in 1991 and managed football clubs such as Sporting CP, NY/NJ MetroStars, and Nagoya Grampus Eight.
