Following a collegiate career at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas for the Longhorns, Atkins was picked by the Washington Mystics at the 2018 WNBA Draft in the first round, as the seventh overall pick. Upon signing the team, she joined players such as Elena Delle Donne, Kristi Toliver, and Natasha Cloud.

In her debut season, she was named to the All-Defensive Second Team in August 2018. In the following months, she was also named to the All-Rookie Team.
