Cam Thomas Aka Cameron Thomas is a rising American professional basketball player. He is currently playing in the NCAA Division I for the Louisiana State University basketball team. Cameron was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the best shooting guards in the 2020 class. Thomas has declared his name for the 2021 NBA draft.
Cameron Thomas was born on October 13, 2001, in Yokosuka, Kanagawa, Prefecture, Japan. He is the son of Leslie Thomas and her husband. He has an elder sister named Shaniece Collins. Thomas graduated from Oak Hill Academy and enrolled at the Louisiana State University. Cameron stands six feet and four inches tall and weighs 95 kg.
Cameron's interest in basketball started at the early age of five. He idolized Kove Byrant while growing up. Thomas was part of his High School basketball team. He played for the Oscar F. Smith High School for his freshman year. Cam could not play for the sophomore year and transferred to Oak Hill Academy for the junior season. Thomas averaged a team-high 26.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, leading his team to a 31–5 record.
Thomas averaged 31.5 points for the senior year, six rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game, leaving as the program's all-time leading scorer. Cam was named the Offensive Player of the Year in the Nike Elite Youth Basketball League after averaging a league-best 29.5 points per game and leading his team to the Tournament of Champions title. He received numerous scholarships and eventually committed to play college basketball for LSU and rejected the offer from UCLA.
Cameron made his college debut against SIU Edwardsville and scored 27 points in a 94-81 win. He led all freshmen in scoring with 23.0 points per game while also averaging 3.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. At the end of the season, Thomas was named to the First Team All-SEC. In early 2021, Cameron optioned not to continue his sophomore year and declared for the 2021 NBA draft.
