Isaiah led Biloxi High School's Basketball team to the 5A Mississippi State Championship. Canaan went to Murray State University and averaged 10.4 points per game as a freshman. In 2010, he was named Ohio Valley Conference's "Freshman of the Year".

On July 15, 2013, Houston Rockets drafted Isaiah in the 2013 NBA draft, with a rookie scale contract. He scored a career-high of 24 points in November. During that period Canaan suffered from a severe ankle sprain injury.
In February, he was traded to 'Philidelphia 76ers' in exchange for K.J McDaniels. On March 4, 2015, he recorded career high of 31 points and eight 3 pointers.

On July 20, 2016, Canaan signed with Chicago Bulls and in 2016-2017, he appeared in 39 games and averaged 4.6 points. Phoenix Suns called him in December 2017.
