Benjamin has been athletic since a young age and was part of his high school football, basketball, and track team. He played college football for the Florida State University.
Kelvin Shawon Benjamin was born on February 5, 1991, in Belle Glade, Florida. He was a student of the Glades Central High School where he played high school football. He played in the position of wide receiver and was named First Team All-Palm Beach County by Sun-Sentinel and was selected tot he Palm Beach Post All-Area First Team. He was very athletic and was also in the school's basketball team and ran track as well.
Benjamin joined Florida State University after high school and played college football. He redshirted his freshman year of 2011 and started playing in 2012. He played the 2012 and 2013 season but forewent the final two years of college football to enter the 2014 NFL Draft.
The Carolina Panthers drafted Kelvin Benjamin in the first round, 28th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Benjamin signed a four-year $7.66 million contract with the Panthers on June 4, 2014.
Benjamin and Jerricho Cotchery were in a competition for the Panthers No. 1 receiver spot which was won by Benjamin. At the end of his rookie season, Benjamin recorded 73 receptions, 1,008 yards receiving and 9 touchdowns. He became only the 11th rookie wide receiver in NFL history to record a 1,000-yard season.

Before the beginning of the 2015 season, Kelvin Benjamin tore his ACL during a practice match with the Miami Dolphins and was unable to contribute any further to the team. He remained on the injured reserve of the team for the rest of the season due to his injury. Even without Benjamin's presence, the Panthers won 15 games of the season setting a franchise record.

The Carolina Panthers traded Kelvin Benjamin to the Buffalo Bills on October 31, 2017, in exchange for a 2018 third and seventh-round draft pick.
