After serving as assistant coach for Real Madrid from 2014 to 2017, Hierro became the manager of Spain National Team on June 13, 2018, sacking Julen Lopetegui 2 days before Spain's first match in World Cup against Portugal.

Spain's 2018 World Cup Performance

Spain, the winner of the 2010 FIFA World Cup previously made up to the quarterfinals 4-times (1934, 1986, 1994, 2022). However, this time luck didn't favor Spain as they lost to Russia in the Round of 16: World Cup 2018 in the penalty shoot-out after a 1-1 draw in 90 minutes.

Initially, Spain in the Group B, played their first match against Portugal on June 15, 2018, with a 3-3 draw, followed by their 1-0 win against Iran on June 20 and a 2-2 draw against Morocco on June 25, 2018.

Being the Group B's winner with 5 points ahead of Portugal, Spain headed to Super 16: Knockout stage and were to face Russia for their place in quarterfinals.

In the match against Russia, Sergei Ignashevich score for Spain in 11 minutes, however, it was equalized by Russian Artem Dyzuba's score in 41 minutes. Spain's 4-2-3-1 formation couldn't net the score in 90 minutes game despite many attempts, which led to extra-time game, but the result was same.

As the match headed to penalty-shootout, the fortune turned it's back to Spain after Spain's Koke and Iago Aspas missed penalty which was utilized by Russia with 4 shoot-outs in the net. Spain got knocked off from World Cup while Russia headed to quarterfinals.
