Spanish Defender Gerard Pique Confirms his Retirement from International Football Soccer

Spanish Defender Gerard Pique who plays club football for FC Barcelona has ended his successful International career with the Spain National Team. Pique seems not interested to change his decision despite the appointment of former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique as the new coach of Spain National Team.

The 31-year-old defender debuted with the national team in 2009 and went on to play 102 games with the team netting five times. He was also the member of the most triumphant Spanish team that went on to win their first World Cup in 2010 and also the Euro Cup in 2012.

Pique talked about retiring from the international game following a qualifier against Albania in October 2016 due to several criticism. However, he did not disclose the immediate plan of retirement following the loss to Russia at the World cup.

The Barcelona defender did not make any changes in his decision despite the appointment of Enrique as the head coach.

"I spoke to Luis Enrique a few days ago. He called me and I told him the decision was taken a long time ago and that I had thought about it carefully. It was a beautiful time with the national team in which I had the chance to win the World Cup and the European Championship. Now I want to focus on Barca. I have a few years left here and I'm going to enjoy them a lot."

Pique has played 276 games for Barcelona and managed to score 23 goals. His team will now face  Sevilla in the Spanish Super Cup in Tangier, Morocco, on Sunday at 21:00 BST.
