Talanoa Hufanga is one of the most promising young players in the NFL. He plays as a safety for the San Francisco 49ers and has made a name for himself with his hard-hitting tackles, interceptions, and leadership skills.

But how did he get to where he is today? This article will explore his journey from his humble beginnings on a farm in Oregon, to his college career at USC, to his draft and rookie season with the 49ers, and his current status as a Pro Bowl and All-Pro player.

Early Years

Talanoa Hufanga was born on February 1, 2000, in Corvallis, Oregon. He grew up on a farm where he and his family looked after goats, cows, chickens, pigs, dogs, and cats. He also drove dirt bikes and tractors, but his favorite activity was taking care of his goat. He said, "Growing up on a farm, it’s a different kind of childhood. I didn’t have neighborhood friends to hang out with."

Hufanga comes from a family of football players, as his brother, T.J., was a linebacker at Oregon State from 2013-14 and his cousins Marlon and Tuli Tuipulotu are both defensive linemen at USC. He started playing football at a young age and showed a natural talent for the sport.

He played safety, wide receiver, and quarterback at Crescent Valley High School in Corvallis, where he was a star athlete and student. As a senior in 2017, he was the Polynesian High School National Player of the Year.

High School and College Career

Hufanga was a highly sought-after recruit and received offers from many top college programs, such as Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon, and UCLA. He ultimately chose to attend the University of Southern California (USC), where he said he felt at home and connected with the coaches and players.

Hufanga enrolled at USC in 2018 and immediately made an impact as a true freshman. He played in eight games with five starts, before suffering a season-ending broken collarbone. He finished the season with 51 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 4 pass breakups. He was named to the Freshman All-American team by ESPN and 247Sports.

As a sophomore in 2019, Hufanga started all 10 games he played in and led the team with 90 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 3 pass breakups, and 2 forced fumbles. He was named to the All-Pac-12 Second Team by the coaches and the media and was a semifinalist for the Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award.

Hufanga decided to forego his senior year and declare for the 2021 NFL draft, where he said he hoped to fulfill his lifelong dream of playing in the NFL.

He said, “I want to thank God for blessing me with this opportunity. I want to thank my family, my coaches, my teammates, and the Trojan family for supporting me throughout this journey. I’m excited for the next chapter of my life, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

Journey to Pro

Hufanga was projected to be a mid-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, as scouts praised his instincts, physicality, versatility, and leadership, but also noted his injury history, lack of elite speed, and coverage skills as potential concerns.

Hufanga was drafted by the San Francisco 49ers in the fifth round, 180th overall, of the 2021 NFL draft. He was the 13th safety selected, and the third player from USC, after offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

Hufanga signed his four-year rookie contract with the 49ers on May 13, 2021. The deal was worth $3.8 million, with a $327,696 signing bonus.
