Arnor Smarason is an Icelandic footballer who plays as a winger and occasionally striker for Swedish football club, Hammarby IF and Iceland National Football Team.

He is also the cousin of former forward of Iceland Football Team, Petur Peturrson.

Arnor Smarason's Early Life

Arnor Smarason was born in Akranes, Iceland on 7 September 1988. Born in Iceland, he holds an Icelandic nationality. He also has a sister named Anna Smáradóttir.

He began his football career at the age of eight when he joined the youth ranks of Iceland football club, IA Akranes. He along with his family moved to Norway and a played a single season with Norwegian club, Molde FK in their youth levels.

After returning back to Iceland, Smarason rejoined his former club, IA Akranes and after a year, he went to Holland to be with Youth Club of  SC Heerenveen.

Arnor Smarason's Professional Club Career

SC Heerenveen

After his time with the youth side, Smarason signed his first professional contract with the main team in September 2007 agreeing to stay three years with Heerenveen.

From 2008/09 season onwards, Smarason became a regular player for the club. He made his debut for the Dutch side on 18 September 2008 against Portuguese Football Club, Vitoria in Europa League.

He scored his first goal for the Eredivisie club against Roda on 19 October 2008. The club went on to win the Dutch Cup during 2008/2009 season.

Esbjerg

Arnor signed a three-year contract deal with Danish Superliga club, Esbjerg fB on June 2010. He played his first game for the team against Odense Boldklub in 2010/11 season. He went on registered his first goal for Danish club, Silkeborg on 28 August 2010.

He was the member of the side that featured current Danish footballers as Jonas Knudsen and Martin Braithwaite in the Esbjerg team of 2010/2011 season.

He was the member of the team that won Danish Cup in 2012/13.

Helsingborgs IF

He signed a three and half year deal with Swedish club, Helsingborgs IF in July 2013. He made his debut for the Swedish club against Osters IF on July 2013 and scored his first goal for the club against Djurgardens IF on 5 August.

FC Torpedo Moscow

During 2015 season he was loaned to Russian Club, FC Torpedo Moscow and made his debut and scored his first goal for the Russian team against  Zenit Saint Petersburg on 15 March 2015

Return to Helsingborgs IF

He made a return back to the  Helsingborg and became the second top scorer in the league.

Hammarby IF

The Icelandic midfielder signed with Swedish Football Club, Hammarby IF on a three-year contract deal. He made his debut on 26 February 2016 against Syrianska FC and scored his first goal for Swedish club against  AIK in March.

As of 2017, he is the vice-captain of the team.

Arnor Smarason International Career

Arnor Smarason represented Iceland in the Under 17, 19 and 21 levels and made his debut for the senior national team against Wales in a friendly match.

He scored his first international goal against Liechtenstein on 11 February 2009. He was not part of Euro 2016 squad, the tournament was the first major tournament for the Scandinavian nation.

Smarason along with several players like  Jón Guðni Fjóluson, Mikael Anderson played a  huge role in taking Iceland to its first ever world cup football championship berth at FIFA World Cup 2018 Russia.
