Renard's coaching career started in 1999 with the French football team "SC Draguignan". After two years he joined as an assistant in the Chinese football team "Shanghai Cosco" with head coach Claude Le Roy. At the end of 2003, he moved to Cambridge in order to manage "Cambridge United". Later on, he managed the Vietnamese club "Song Da Nam Dinh". In 2005 he became the manager of the French football team "AS Cherbourg". After two years he left the team and went to assist Claude Le Roy.
In May 2008 he was appointed as the manager of the Zambian national team. He took Zambia toward the quarter-final stage in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations. He left the Zambian team in early April 2010. Two days after he left the Zambian team he became the manager of the Angola national football team. He left the team in early October 2010.
On 21 Jan 2011, Renard signed a contract with the Algerian club "USM Alger" for being the head coach. Later on 22 October 2011, he returned back to Zambia in order to assist the African football team in the 2012 African Cup Of Nations. He also assisted the same team in the 2013 African Cup of Nations.
At the end of October, Renard's contract expired for Zambia. On 7th Oct 2013, he was appointed as the manager of Ligue 1 side Sochaux. He left the club after the club got relegated. In April 2014 he was involved with Morocco national team. In July 2014 Renard became the manager of the Ivory Coast national team. Later on May 2015, he became the manager of the French club "Lille".
In Feb 2016 he was appointed as the manager of the national team of Morocco. In November 2017 he became successful in taking Morocco to FIFA World Cup 2018. The coach eventually left the team in 2019 and then moved to Saudi Arabia as their new head coach.
Talking about Renard's personal life, he is a married man but the name of his wife is not public yet. He has two daughters (Candide Renard and Audrey Renard) and one son (Kevin Renard) from his married life.
