In 2009, Hiroki Sakai was promoted to the senior team of the Kashiwa Reysol. Soon he was loaned out to Mogi Mirim for five months. In 2012 season, he made his professional debut and first-team debut. In the following season, Sakai won J. League Division 1 with the club and individually he was awarded J. League Rookie of the Year and J. League Best XI.

Sakai played overall 51 matches and scored 2 goals throughout his three-season spell with the Reyson. Also, in his last season, he won 2012 Japanese Super Cup with the club.

Hannover 96

In July 2012, Sakai penned a contract with Bundesliga side Hannover for a reported transfer fee of £1.08 million. In his debut season, Sakai played 13 League and 3 Continental matches.

Marseille
