On 30th May 2012, Kim made his international debut for South Korea national team in a friendly match against Spain.

During the 2015 Asian Cup, he became the starting goalkeeper for South Korea national team except for the match against Kuwait. Throughout the tournament, he kept a clean sheet until the final against Australia, where he conceded two goals in a 2–1 loss. Later, he was nominated for the Best Goalkeeper award in the tournament, but he failed to win it.

More, he has represented his national side in 2011 and 2015 AFC Asian Cup. He was the South Korean squad brought the 2017 EAFF East Asian Cup in a home.

In June 2018, Kim was named in South Korea's final 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World along with his teammates Kim Young-Gwon, Ki Sung-Yeung, and Moon Seon-min.
