Career of Marcus Berg

Following his youth career, Marcus Berg played at the youth academy of Torsby IF, IFK Velen, and IFK Goteborg. He began his professional career with a senior squad of Goteborg during the 2005 season after spending a couple of years in the Junior team.

Berg played alongside with his sibling, Jonatan in the club. He was the member of the team that won 2017 Allsvenskan. Before ending his career in a team, he netted 21 goals in 53 appearances.

He was signed by FC Groningen on 14th August 2007, with the transfer fee of £3.60 million to replace the departing Ajax-bound Luis Suarez. In his debut season with the club, he scored 18 goals, led the team to claimed seventh-place.

Marcus Berg later netted four goals against Roda JC in December 2008. For the club, he played 56 games scoring 32 goals. On 17th July 2009, he was transferred to Hamburger SV in a deal worth £9 million on a five-year deal. Before leaving the club in 2013, he scored 5 goals in 54 appearances.

Berg was sent on loan to PSV from Hamburger SV on 21st July 2010, in a deal worth £900K for 2010-011 season. During his loan-season with the team, he scored 8 goals in 25 appearances.

Panathinaikos

On 8th July 2013, Berg completed his transfer to Panathinaikos on a free transfer on a four-year deal. He scored a goal in his debut appearance against Panetolikos. He scored a goal and provide assists for Danijel Pranjic in a 3-0 win against Olympiacos, which was the biggest victory in the history of the team.

Following that, Berg scored a hat-trick in a  4-1 away victory over Aris. Similarly, he netted a hat-trick in the final of Greek Cup against rivals PAOK.  On January 26, 2017, he renewed his contract with the team until 2018.

Berg extended his deal with the team for next three-years for an annual fee of €1.1 million and with a €10 million release clause. The team declared the first offer of Alain FC €2.5–3 million about the on him purchase.

Berg has agreed to sign a two (plus one) years' season contract with Al Ain in a deal worth £2.97 million on 1st July 2017, with an annual salary of €3 million after taxes.

Later, Berg scored a four-goal in a 5-0 victory against Al Dhafra FC, led his team to win the 2017-018 UAE Pro-League, became the top scorer of the League in his first season. He has so far scored 25 goals in 21 appearances. Berg is the member of the team that won 2017-018 UAE Pro-League and UAE President’s Cup.

International Career

In 2004, Berg made his international debut with the Sweden U19 squad where he scored 3 goals in 8 appearances. Following that, he netted 8 goals in 19 appearances. He was called up by senior squad for a friendly match against Turkey and made his debut on 6th February 2008, with the coach Lars Lagerback.

Berg then called-up regularly during Sweden’s 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. He netted his first international goal on 10 June 2009, in the 4–0 home victory against Malta at 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification.

Following that, Berg played two games at UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying campaign as a substitute. Later, he was invited for UEFA Euro 2016 by manager Erik Hamren. He then played two games as his team lost against Italy and Belgium.

Berg became the main winger at the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification after the retirement of Zlatan Ibrahimovic. As of May 2018, he was added for Sweden's 23 squads for the FIFA World Cup 2018.
