Paul Stalteri is a Canadian retired soccer player who played as a defender/midfielder. During his playing stint, he played for the Toronto Lynx (1997), Werder Bremen (1998-2005), Tottenham Hotspur (2005-2008), and Borussia Mönchengladbach  (2009-2011) as well as Canada national team (1997-2010). Currently, he is the assistant manager of Toronto FC.

Career

Playing Career

Paul Stalteri began playing football with the youth system Malton Bullets (1992-1995). Further, he played for one year at Clemson University in 1996.

After a freshman season, he turned professional and joined Toronto Lynx in 1997. That season, he played 16 games with 7 goals. 

In 1998, Stalteri joined Werder Bremen. In August 2000, Stalteri made his debut with the Werder Bremen, scoring in the season's first game against Energie Cottbus. 

In the 2001-02 season, he became the first team rooster at Bremen and cemented his role as a regular in the 2002–03 season. Werder Bremen won the Bundesliga in 2003-04. 

In May 2005, Bremen trensferred Stalteri Tottenam Hotspur. 

On 4th March 2007,  he scored a dramatic last-minute winner against London rivals West Ham United, a substitute. 

On 31st January 2008, Stalteri joined  Fulham on loan until the end of the season. On 9th Feburary 2008, Stalteri made his Fulham debut in a 1-0 loss against Middlesbrough. On 21st December 2008, his contract was terminated by mutual consent. 

In 2009, he joined  Borussia Monchengladbach.

On 20th March 2013, he announced his retirement as a player at his 35. 

On 17th August 1997, Stalteri made his international debut for Canada against Iran. He earned a total of 84 caps and scored 7 caps, becoming the most capped Canadian of all time until this record was surpassed by Julian De Guzman in 2015. 

Stalteri was inducted into the Canadian Soccer Hall of Fame in May 2017. 

Coaching Career

In 2020, Paul Stalteri joined York United as assistant manager. In 2022, he switched to the Toronto FC as an assistant manager. He was part of the squad that won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2000.
